News from St James Church, New Bradwell
Sat in the heart of New Bradwell, St. James church is in an in ideal position to follow in its mission to play an active role in the community.
With our congregation numbers slowly increasing since Covid, we are now welcoming more visitors to the church and the congregation at our 9.30 Easter morning service was the largest for some time. The children’s Easter workshop on Easter Holy Saturday morning was also extremely well attended.
With children and young people in mind, we hold regular Saturday morning “Messy Church” sessions for toddlers and younger children and we are now starting a youth group for older children and young adults.
The church continues to forge links with New Bradwell school. In partnership with the Bridgebuilder Trust, the church hosted a very successful interactive “Easter Cracked” presentation. We are having stalls at this summer’s school carnival fete.
Our Sunday services start at 9.30 and vary from week to week to include services from Anglican, Methodist and Baptist traditions as well as some Morning Worship services, Healing services and less formal Open Door services.
We enjoy very strong links with Bradwell Silver band. Their concert back in April played to a full church, the band will return to church to celebrate our Patronal Festival on 20th July and the annual open air churchyard concert will take place on 17th August.
Our Saturday morning Cafe at 10.00 am is now firmly established and is very well attended, a place to meet and chat in a safe and comfortable environment. We have recently started a Wednesday morning cafe from 9.30 to 11.30 to which all are welcome.
It has been noticed by some locals that the church bell has not been heard for some time. This is because a survey has identified structural weaknesses in the wooden cradle which holds the bell and so for safety reasons we are unable to ring the bell until it has been repaired. The repair bill is estimated to cost around £6k.and we are currently investigating funding options, of course any donations from the community would be gratefully received!
There are however some sounds coming out of the bell tower! An electronic Swift calling device has been installed which it is hoped will encourage Swifts to nest in the specially constructed Swift nesting boxes in the tower. This, along with our churchyard “Bug Hotels” , areas of the churchyard left wild and other initiatives have seen us attain a Bronze Eco church award.
That is just a brief summary of what’s happening at St. James. To find out more, please visit our website stjamesnewbradwell.org.uk or our Facebook page.
We do hope to welcome you to St. James very soon.
